Still Life/Study of Food by donavanneil Still Life/Study of Food by donavanneil
This is something I started quite a long time ago, but hadn't finished. It's just a study from a still life I set up once, finished using a photo of the scene. It was a lot of fun studying the organic shapes and the reflections on the hard surfaces.

Stupefying work. The feeling of reality is incredible. I particularly like the reflections and the shadows on the plate, the effect of matter is striking.

I love that this is digital but looks traditional!

I spent a lot of my life focusing on traditional media and really feeling unsure about digital. I seem to have satisfied a lot of my reservations by approaching digital painting in a really traditional way; I let my knowledge of and appreciation for oils and textured surfaces and imperfections sort of be the standard for the work. I like to give it a really sort of earthy, oily, tactile feeling/look.

I'm really glad you like it! :)

Yeah I really see that here. I think tat using a traditional method in digital art really works.I know that I was afraid to use traditional materials as a kid because I feared I'd be wasting them. Digital made me more confident because I couldn't waste paint and waste money.  I still love doing traditional art though and want to get better

I still love traditional media, too. I think both are wonderful ways to learn and both allow us to create beautiful works of art. I think it's so strange that so many artists and art-lovers create these dichotomies between traditional and digital media, and even between "realism" and "anime/manga." It's ultimately just unnecessary and distracting.

Wonderful work ^^ Great job with the textures, the cherries especially look good enough to eat xD

Thank you!:D

The cherries were one of the easiest and most rewarding parts to paint. Maybe the ease with which they were rendered shows through.

I often find that it's very visible in a finished product when something is a real stuggle for an artist, and things done with ease and pleasure often seem so much more graceful.

I'm glad you enjoy the painting! :)

Thanks! I'm glad you like it. :D

My little brother kept telling me the peach needed to look softer -- I'm glad I listened to him. haha
